Short History
Monterey County Now is the website for Monterey County Weekly, the county's largest locally owned and independent newspaper, founded in 1988. The Weekly's in-depth coverage of news, arts and entertainment has been recognized nationwide for presenting strong investigative reporting, diverse stories about local arts and entertainment, and for delivering stories important to the people that live and work in the community.
Reaching nearly 1 in 3 households countywide, the Weekly has the highest circulation of any newspaper in Monterey County and has won over 75 local, regional, state or national editorial awards. While the reporting is nearly entire local, Monterey County Weekly was the only newspaper in the alternative press to send a reporter to the Middle East to cover both the Desert Storm war in the early 1990s and the Iraq war in early 2003.
Our intent is to both inform and inspire readers, to lead them to become more involved in the community, and to be the premiere resource for Monterey County's arts and entertainment.
Supporting the local business community, the Weekly and Monterey County Now offer a direct pipeline to over 100,000 people per week, with both print and online advertising opportunities. Our classified section has over 4,000 ads per week, serving individuals, employers and realtors with affordable advertising.
The Weekly was the first newspaper to go online in Monterey County, starting in 1996.
