The Chuck Close exhibition at Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada is a visitation of extraordinary prints by one of the most revered artists alive. His portraits of people famous and not famous are big, carefully ordered renderings of color through a meticulous technique. The gallery upstairs from the main Dart gallery, though, is devoted to a special series of prints done of one of Close’s friends, composer Philip Glass. Each print is from the same iconic photograph that Close took of the composer in the 1960s, but each is also different from the next, which is an apt way to describe Glass’ famed repetitious musical pieces. For even more refraction, Glass wrote a 2005 piece about Close titled “A Musical Portrait of Chuck Close,” and the museum is showing a film on loop in which Glass talks about the significance of Close’s art through March 31.
