In an exciting announcement Tuesday morning, April 1, Monterey Mayor Tyller Williamson revealed plans to build a state-of-the-art ice rink in the city.
“A local hero and photojournalist suggested building an ice rink, and I think it’s a fantastic idea,” Williamson said. “We hope to bring a professional sports team, like a hockey team, to Monterey.”
The initial plans call for the rink to be located along Del Monte Beach, just south of Lake El Estero. The rink will feature several amenities, including community rooms for birthday parties, eight locker rooms, a café and a bar. The facility will offer both youth and adult hockey leagues, figure skating classes and free skate sessions.
“We hope to bring a minor league hockey team to Monterey so we can have at least one good semi-pro sports team that is entertaining,” Williamson explained.
The estimated cost of the rink is around $15 million and will be funded through grants.
“We were going to ask the San Jose Sharks to chip in, but then we realized we wouldn’t be able to display any cups in the building, since the Sharks have never won any,” Williamson said. “However, the Los Angeles Kings have said they would contribute a significant amount toward the building costs.”
County Supervisor Kate Daniels has also thrown her support behind the project. “I think this is a great opportunity to provide both youth and adults with a fun activity, and I will support this 110 percent,” she said.
Williamson said he hopes the community comes out to the City Council meeting on April 1 to show their support.
