After more than two months of closure, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will reopen to the public on Friday, Oct. 16.
The park was temporarily closed due to the Timber Fire, which began on Aug. 8 and burned approximately 517 acres within the park, including many of its trails. As of Monday, Oct. 12, the Timber Fire has burned more than 25,300 acres and is 97 percent contained. The state park served as a major incident command post and base camp for Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and cooperating agencies, hosting more than 1,000 firefighters from across the state and country.
Starting Friday, Oct. 16, visitors will be able to access many of the state park’s popular areas and facilities, including day-use areas, the campground, Buzzards Roost Trail, the river path, nature trail, Redwood Grove Boardwalk, the nature center, Campfire Center and Big Sur Lodge.
Portions of the park will remain closed due to fire impacts, including several trails that will be closed until further notice for recovery work. These trails include Pfeiffer Falls Trail, Valley View Trail, Oak Grove Trail, Mt. Manuel Trail, Big Sur River Gorge Trail and Pine Ridge Trail.
Burned areas continue to present hazards, including unstable trees, falling rocks and debris, damaged trails, erosion, and the potential for debris flows and flash flooding during rain storms. The region is currently preparing for a very strong El Niño fall and winter post-fires.
State parks warns that visitors entering close trails or burned areas will be cited.
