TO THE STARS… It’s always a good idea to learn from the best. This seems especially true of baking, which is why it is exciting that the folks at Ad Astra Bread Co. are inviting aspiring loaf-slingers into the new kitchen for a sourdough baking class. You’ll learn things like starter maintenance, dough formulas, basic shaping skills and how to bake a loaf in your home oven – all from some of the area’s best bakers. The first class ($125) on Jan. 20 is already sold out, so keep an eye on the bakery’s website (and Instagram page) for the next edition. 479 Alvarado St., Monterey. adastrabread.com, instagram.com/ad.astra.bread.co.
FEAST FOR ALL… The Community Dinner Organization and the Monterey County Fair & Event Center are back at it with a 38th annual free Christmas dinner on Monday, Dec. 25. The dinner itself is free and open to anyone, plus the organizers are looking for volunteers to help prepare and distribute meals. Call Tiffany (233-2780) if you’re able to help out; to donate, call Rich (757-5709) or Trish (238-1460). That’s what the holiday spirit is all about. 2004 Fairgound Road, Monterey.
PAINT PARTY… Sip a beer, snack on a Bavarian pretzel (or loaded nachos) and get your creativity flowing. Main Street Art Studio and Gallery hosts a paint and sip night at Stonies Taphouse & Bistro in Salinas on Thursday, Dec. 21. Tickets ($35) include one drink and all the supplies you’ll need to start painting. 1366 S. Main St., Salinas. mainstartstudio.com.
BUNDLE IT UP… The holidays are a busy time of year. There are festivities to attend to and family to see and lots of meals to cook. Cafe Carmel is here to help with their holiday bundles – breakfast, savory lunch or sweet treat dessert packs that include all the things you need to kickstart your day, or celebrate tea time with friends and family. The bundles ($50 each) also make great gifts. Ocean Avenue and Mission Street, Carmel. 624-3870, cafecarmel.com.
