web photo - 5/9 - voting

Early voting has begun in Monterey County.

Erik Chalhoub here, with a reminder that it is officially election season. It’s difficult to not know this, as signs for candidates asking for your vote have sprouted on seemingly every high-traffic intersection in Monterey County.

In my daily commute from North County, I see many signs for District 2 supervisor candidates Glenn Church and Ramon Gomez. Anecdotally, it seems Gomez has the upper hand on the signs, since I see many more of his than I do of Church’s. Gomez even has a large sign just outside of his district at the intersection of Blanco and Davis roads in Salinas, urging North County voters commuting to the Peninsula and back to vote for him.

It’s a good season to be a printing company. Tens of thousands of dollars (and more) from candidates pour into these companies to print their signs. We know that thanks to campaign disclosure forms easily accessible on the Monterey County Elections Department website, which show who donated to a candidate, and how that candidate used the money.

Viewing such forms is a favorite pastime for my colleague Squid, as they provide endless entertainment (at least for Squid) on who is backing who, and more interestingly, who is not a supporter.

In this week’s edition of the WeeklySquid took a first look at the most recent campaign reporting documents, getting a sense of the alliances that are forming during this primary election. Squid also came across a mysterious new political action committee that formed allegedly in support of supervisor candidates in two different counties: Church in Monterey County and Felipe Hernandez in Santa Cruz County.

Squid understandably doesn’t follow Santa Cruz County politics. But as someone who has covered that district’s election for three different cycles, I can say it’s never been dull, even turning ugly in 2022. I’ll be curious to see what this PAC does, and how much, if any, support it gives to Church.

Check out Squid’s column to get a take on the election that only Squid can provide.
