Evacuation orders are underway in a remote area of southeastern Monterey County, where lithium ion batteries reportedly caught fire at a storage facility on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Cal Fire firefighters initially responded to the fire at the Parkfield Solar Plant on the 92000 block of Turkey Flat Road shortly after 11am, according to radio traffic.
At 5:21pm, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order within a two-mile radius of the facility, located southeast of Parkfield near the San Luis Obispo border.
Crews remain on site to monitor the situation, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Crews are working closely with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Monterey County Department of Health and hazardous materials responders from Salinas Fire to ensure the safety of nearby communities and reduce any potential risks,” reads an update from Cal Fire.
