In a sign that would appear to bode well for the Presidio's future, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that a $56.3 million design-build contract has been awarded to build a new barracks at the Presidio of Monterey.
"The increased number of beds provided to the Presidio will allow them to maintain a high volume of trainees taking part in the most recognized foreign language program in the world," Corps Program Manager Capt. David McDonald says in a statement.
The contract was awarded to Tempe, Arizona-based Sundt Construction, and construction is expected to begin in spring 2016.
The project will also include a dining room and administrative space, and will incorporate sustainability features like rainwater collection and solar water heating. The building is ultimately expected to received LEED Silver certification, the statement says.
The Corps' statement does not mention how many beds the project will add to the base, but that it will have "modern living spaces comparable to living standards in the private sector."
McDonald could not immediately be reached for comment.
