After a failed run for County Supervisor in the June primary, Salinas City Councilman Sergio Sanchez was gearing up for a campaign to hold onto his District 1 City Council seat—but when he filed papers Friday, Sanchez supporters came up three signatures short of the 20 required to run for city office.
Now, Sanchez is planning a run for mayor.
He has until 5:30pm on Wednesday to turn in 20 legitimate District 1 voter signatures in the mayoral race, and is disqualified from the council race after the filing error. (He submitted 29 signatures last Friday for the council election, but only 17 were matches as registered voters.)
"I just pulled the papers to run for mayor, and I'm crossing the I's and dotting the T's," Sanchez says. "I'm excited to continue serving the city of Salinas."
He joins retired Salinas cop Joe Gunter and dentist Hla Myaing—as well as a handful of other prospective candidates who still have 48 hours to file papers with City Hall—in the contest to replace retiring Mayor Dennis Donohue.
The only candidate so far to file for Sanchez's East Salinas seat is correctional officer Joshua Kuzmicz.
