The heavy rains on Sunday afternoon did not deter about 400 people marching through downtown Monterey, gathering in solidarity to promote peace and unity after Donald Trump’s surprise election win.

The march started from Window and the Bay park on Del Monte Avenue as protesters marched to Colton Hall, where people gathered to listen to speakers like Michelle Welsh of the ACLU, Vinz Koller of the local Democratic Party, County Supervisor Jane Parker and more.

At the end of the final speech, audience members hugged, shook hands, and exchanged contact information.

According to an email from Phillip Crawford of the Monterey County Nonviolent Action Committee, the event was called by a group of people who wanted to express their opposition to the misogyny, religious bigotry, racism and xenophobia of Trump and to show their support for the human rights of all people.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the following correction. An estimated 400 people, not 100, gathered for the march.

Where did the figure of 100 people come from? There were several hundred people there. Somewhere between 300 and 500 by most estimates.
