Marina City Hall

Marina City Hall.

In 2025, the Marina City Council approved $500,000 for a generator to power the Rocky Han Community Center and City Hall in the event of an outage. That generator is currently in the engineering and design phase, according to Public Works Director Ismael Hernandez, so in preparation for a possible strong El Niño this season, city officials are bringing in a temporary generator to power the center so it can be used as a place to shelter those affected by an outage.

The Marina City Council heard an update on the city’s storm preparedness plan on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

In the coming days, the city will roll out fliers on social media and in its facilities about how to prepare for severe storms and the resources available in such an event.

Text alerts with information such as road closures will also be sent out (all are encouraged to sign up for Alert Monterey County).

Marina Police Chief Randy Hopkins said officers will be patrolling areas that have historically flooded and will also be on the lookout for any other hazardous conditions.

Sandbags will soon be available on Lake Court.

During the Oct. 20 meeting, the council declared a local emergency in advance of the anticipated storms. Such an action allows the city to seek state and federal disaster relief if it experiences major damage, as well as gives officials the authority to allocate funds for certain emergency services.
