South County residents will be able to file some cases in King City instead of traveling to Salinas or Monterey.

The Monterey County Superior Court expanded its court services in South County to offer limited services for residents every Tuesday.

Residents filing cases for family court, restraining orders, small claims and traffic filings will no longer have to travel to Salinas or Monterey.

The expanded services will be from 9am to 3:30pm. The King City Self-Help Center for walk-ins and appointments is also open Tuesdays from 9am to 3pm.

Additionally, the King City office will offer traffic and child support services the second Tuesday and third Wednesday of each month, respectively.

The King City Courthouse has offered limited services, and since 2013, no longer hears criminal cases; making South County residents travel between one to two hours, round trip, to seek many courthouse services.

In 2021, the King City Courthouse reopened to offer limited services. A year later, in 2022, the state’s Judicial Council reported the upcoming courthouse would be in Seaside despite local residents and politicians advocating for a branch in Greenfield to serve South County residents. The future courthouse would be about 30 minutes away from Salinas and 15 minutes away from Monterey, where the other two courthouses are located.
