Robert Masterson was appointed as King City's new police chief, City Manager Steve Adams announced May 19.
“I believe Bob Masterson is uniquely and highly qualified to lead our Police Department in the future to continue the great progress we’ve made in establishing a model police department and safer community,” Adams said in a statement.
He will replace James Hunt, who is retiring on June 26.
Masterson has a long career in law enforcement including 20 years with Tulare County’s Sheriff Department. He isn’t new to King City: He served as chief of police from 2016-2020.
According to a city statement, Masterson “was instrumental in rebuilding the Police Department staffing, policies, culture, and public trust.”
Two years prior to Masterson’s first appointment, King City PD was involved in a towing scandal that impacted more than 200 people, leading the city to pay a $1.2 million settlement.
"I am honored to once again serve as the Chief of Police for King City. During my time away, I have gained valuable experience and a broader perspective, which I now bring back to the department,” Masterson said.
His first day on the job is June 27.
