The owner of the Aquarius Dive Shop in Monterey, James Vincent, 36, was identified by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office as one of the three victims in a plane crash that took place Saturday night, July 26, just off Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove.
Also on the plane were Jamie Lee Tabscott, 44, of Monterey, and Steve Eugene Clatterbuck, 60, of Salinas.
Vincent appears to have been piloting planes for some time based on his Facebook posts.
"Got my Multi rating today in the new plane," he wrote in a post dated Feb. 17. The twin-engine Beechcraft that crashed was purchased in January under the company name Sea2Sky Aviation, LLC, registered in Delaware.
Pilots who fly multi-engine planes like the twin-engine Beechcraft are required to add a multi-engine rating certification to their existing pilot's license. According to the Beechcraft website, getting such certification takes 10-15 flight hours before passing a check ride and oral exam.
The website encourages pilots to get about a month of comprehensive training that goes beyond learning what's needed for the certification to be prepared in case of emergencies.
Clatterbuck lists himself as "retired/scuba instructor" on his Facebook page. He has worked in the heating and sheet metal business.
"The family and friends of the deceased have expressed that they wish to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community," a statement from the Monterey County Sheriff/Coroner's Office states. "They ask for privacy during this difficult time."
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
