Ford Probe concept fire

A 1979 Ford Ghia Probe 1 Prototype that was shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance was destroyed after the trailer it was being transported in burst into flames on Highway 1 Sunday, Aug. 18.

A concept car that graced the fairway at Concours d’Elegance was destroyed by flames minutes after it left Pebble Beach by trailer on Sunday, Aug. 18.

The 1979 Ford Ghia Probe 1 Prototype was being towed by trailer on northbound Highway 1 around 7pm when, for reasons the Monterey Fire Department is investigating, the trailer caught on fire.

The driver of the truck hauling the trailer pulled over on the Munras Avenue off-ramp, and the flames spread to nearby vegetation.

Seventeen fire personnel from various agencies, led by the Monterey Fire Department, knocked out the flames within 15 minutes.

The driver of the truck was unhurt, while one firefighter suffered a minor injury.

The car, owned by Arroyo Grande-based automobile restorers Scott Grundfor Company, was valued at $1 million.

In an Instagram post, Scott Grundfor Company said it has owned the vehicle for more than 20 years, purchasing it from its original owner, the Ford Motor Company.

The post added that the driver’s quick reaction prevented further damage to the surroundings.

“Many thanks to the brave first responders as well, fireman and police, who mitigated the damages from going beyond our tragic loss,” the post reads. “We are forever lucky to be a part of this car's history, however tragic this event was, and we will bring what remains of the car home to Arroyo Grande so the car can remain next to the Ghia/Ford bodied prototypes in our collection.”
