Colorful juice tops

For years, Monterey County "juice" was limited to Jamba. No longer.

As of a few months ago, my workplace has gotten industrial.

Not in the sexy way that's all the rage these days in restaurants—steel and reclaimed wood and unfinished cement and such—though there's that too.

In the full-on, there's-a-back-hoe-out-my-window-and-vigorous-vibrating-beneath-the-floor type of industrial.

But I love it, even if the concrete pourers smoothed over the spot where I wrote my initials in the new sidewalk.

I love it because it heralds in very, shall we say, concrete ways that The Press Club featuring Perfectly Pressed is coming next to the Weekly at 1123 Fremont Blvd. in Seaside. With plenty of beautiful industrial chic touches.

The hopeful debut date of late next month actually seems doable, though having tracked my share of restaurants (albeit further away than next door) I know those that nail their original open date are rare.

In the meantime, I  find the sparks and giant holes in the pavement in my walk to the door desk sexy.

I broke word about the coming cafe a while back. Check here soon for more updates and some behind-the-scenes shots. Also email mark@mcweekly.com with any ideas of what art and events you'd like to see in the airy, tall and (yes) industrial venue.

And in the meantime, check out my updated list of local independent juice spots.

Sure, we've been a little slow on the cold-press up-slurp in Monterey County, but hey—when it comes to local juice spots, it's a matter of quality, not quantity.

Another reason besides their independence that I can honestly say I love every single juice shop in town is that they're each locally owned, often by enterprising youngsters.

Here they are, in alphabetical order, with links to previous coverage where I can furnish it.

Carmel Belle • Bring on the The Clean and Green (cucumber, apple, kale, spinach, romaine, ginger and parsley) and the The Dr. Feel Good (carrot, pineapple and turmeric) • San Carlos between Ocean and Seventh, Doud Craft Studio, Carmel, 624-1600 • carmelbelle.com

Good to Go • All sorts of creative and magnetic mixes include The Beast with banana, basil, lemon, kale and spinach and the Sunset with sweet potato, peach, bell pepper and orange. Smoothies, sandwiches and salads too. • 171 The Crossroads, Carmel, 574-3125

JULO Life  • This outfit helps meet the juice fix with organic, raw, cold-pressed vegetable juices like the cucumber-kale-spinach-parsley-lemon-romaine blend. • Carmel Farmers Market, 10am-2pm Thursdays, Devendorf Park • www.JULOLife.com

Katie’s Coldpress • Her lemonades, smoothies and juices like the Carmel Sunset with beets, oranges, carrots, apples, romaine and lemon appear at festivals, markets and sporting events. • www.katiescoldpress.com/

Perfectly Pressed • Seemingly wacky but truly intuitive and well-sourced combinations like the popular Mint Kick with apple and collard greens or the Vampear with carrot, Andy Boy cactus pear, Royal Rose radicchio and a nice jalapeño punch have quickly made this an institution. • 961 W. Alisal St., Salinas, 998-8770; Seaside location opening in September/October • www.perfectlypressedjuice.com/
