David Bowie—the legendary, brilliant, chameleon-like songwriter, who taught many generations about the power of staying true to oneself—died Sunday after an 18-month-long battle with cancer. He was 69.
His death was confirmed on Facebook with this message:
January 10 2016 - David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.
Bowie earned admiration in the music world for his ability to masterfully adapt to different music genres including disco, jazz, electronica and punk. His last release, Lazarus, was a parting gift to fans as it opens with the lyrics: "Look up here, I'm in Heaven!"
His son, Duncan Jones, confirmed the news on his Twitter.
