Squid Speaks

RAINING POT… Squid is all for creative solutions to California’s drought. Rain dances? Check. Reusing toilet water? Check (see story, p. 20). Drinking more wine and less water? Check. But here’s one even Squid thinks is a little far-fetched: Grow more pot.

That’s not Squid’s idea; it’s Democratic political henchman/Salinas produce broker Shawn Bagley’s. Bagley is a long-shot candidate for State Senate against incumbent Anthony Cannella, R-Ceres. He’s making the rounds of the vast district, holding meet-n-greets next week in Fresno, Madera and Firebaugh. (Bagels and coffee happen Aug. 15 from 9-11am at the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee HQ in Seaside.)

Bagley’s also writing op-eds on controversial issues like drought and marijuana. In a July 20 column in the Modesto Bee, Bagley issued a rallying cry against illegal pot growers for stealing water, with a “legalize it” message.

“There is one industry that we can change today to ensure more water comes through for our families and farmers – marijuana,” Bagley wrote. “[Politicians] are afraid of being labeled as ‘pro-legalization’ or ‘pro-regulation.’ Well, I’m pro-realization.”

Squid’s all for legal pot, but it doesn’t seem like a real water-supply solution, or a good way to court conservatives. The bigger question: Will there be pot bagels?

50 SHADES OF HEY… Squid loves rainbows and unicorns, and often wishes life consisted of nothing more. But Melissa Godwin, who might be challenging Steve McShane for a seat on the Salinas City Council (she pulled papers, the first step in the process), isn’t going to let Squid dream.

The tagline for Godwin’s blog (melgodwinhereandnow.com) reads: “Life is more than rainbows and unicorns.”

Why does she have to be so dark and stormy? Perhaps it’s because she got kicked in the head by the rider of a runaway horse on the night of July 21, 2012, a rodeo-related accident she recounts in colorful detail on her blog. “That stupid thing people say about it all moving in slow motion, it’s so true!” she writes. (So maybe it’s not stupid?). “People swarmed around me and kept asking me stupid ass questions!” she continues. (Did they ask things like, “Can you feel your arms and legs?”)

Squid was unable to reach Godwin before press time, which is a shame, because Squid has burning questions to ask: In a May 23 post, Godwin, who is married to a Salinas police officer, announces she will begin reading The Crazy Lives of Police Wives (the cover of which features a uniform, a negligee and a handgun), and posting reviews of each chapter weekly. But so far, she hasn’t written another word on it. It’s one thing to rain on Squid’s rainbows, but why must Godwin leave Squid hanging?
