EARTH, CUBED… Squid has always prided Squidself on Squid’s little feet. (Tentacles, technically.) And we all know what little feet mean: little footprints. So you can imagine Squid’s dismay at learning the average American’s carbon footprint: 20 tons a year, five times the global average.

Obscura Digital Project Manager Matt Dowlen – a Pebble Beach native whose fire dancing hobby flared into Burning Man installations – is hoping to drive home just how big that is, with a giant cube representing 1 metric tonne (or 1.1 ’Merican tons) of carbon, or just two weeks of the average America’s CO2 emissions. Tall as a three-story building, the CO2 CUBES digital media installation is wired to show produced and real-time videos on “the science, consequences and solutions to continued carbon emissions.”

Obscura’s creation – backed by Google, YouTube and U.N. Department of Public Information – now floats on a lake in Copenhagen, a looming reminder we don’t have time to keep diddling around on the greatest threat to the planet’s life support system.

TIGER BOMB… Squid has principles. No double-dipping with the same end of the chip (rotate). No beating up on Dan Cort for quitting his mayoral post while writing a book on sustainability in cities. No Speedos. And no prying into a pro athletes’ private life. It’s none of Squid’s biz.

But this, golf fans, is Squid’s business.

Squid’s big-hearted brethren at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am did everything they could to seduce Tiger Woods. They broke up with Poppy Hills. They stripped the field of 180 down to 156. They moved to have the 2010 U.S. Open Pebble Beach’s tougher conditions in place in time for the AT&T – and humped from the first to the 15th to heal bumpy greens he bemoaned before jumping in bed with the Dubai Open in ’02 .

How he handled the bumps hinted at what’s happened now: Rather than take ’em head-on, he took issue. Now he’s asking the same fans who gave him so much support and profit to respect a “principle” for some “privacy,” days after he might’ve made a simple admission that could’ve slowed the over-energized rumor mill.

But Squid’s rooting for Tiger – Squid and Tiger are both tremendously talented and slightly flawed animals (though Tiger’s short game’s a little better).

And Squid will gladly take Tiger back (though Squid guesses the paparazzi-pulling foursomes with Justin Timberlake and Bill Murray will be exactly what he won’t court). Forgiveness, you see, is one of Squid’s principles. Squid just hopes Tiger hasn’t deleted the AT&T’s number from his cell.
