Squid Fry: The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made. - Groucho Marx

HOW ABOUT A JOB SHARE?… Squid wants to trade jobs with Marina Coast Water District General Manager Jim Heitzman. Not only does Heitzman earn about seven times as much as Squid at $205,000 a year, but now the district is interviewing for a newly created assistant general manager position. The job advertisement says the assistant would “coordinate selected activities of district managers as directed; represent the general manager to outside agencies… develop district budgets… develop, plan and implement goals and objectives for the district.” Isn’t this what the district hired a general manager for? With an assistant GM, Squid figures Heitzman will do less work for much more money compared with his predecessor Marc Lucca. Heitzman will have it made: Not as many boring water meetings, less number-crunching, and heck, maybe some time to ditch the office and catch some surf at nearby Marina State Beach. Squid is so very jealous.

CINCO DE FLY-O… Squid got May 5 started right with a tentacle-curlingly sweet mojito at dawn. A meeting of the Light Brown Apple Moth Environmental Advisory Task Force at Monterey Beach Resort got an even stickier start with a proposal from Helping Our Peninsula’s Environment founder David Dilworth, who suggests the state can control the invasive moths with strategically placed pheromone-baited sticky traps.

A Fox news report and a Monterey County Herald article focused on Dilworth’s proposal, ignoring the more important parts of the meeting. Like, for example, questions of whether wasps used to parasitize LBAM eggs would attack butterfly larvae, or whether last fall’s spraying had any impact on LBAM densities. For all Dilworth’s good intentions, his propensity to make unsupported statements makes it way too easy for officials to dismiss, including some very scientifically minded and legally savvy people. The attending public was not allowed to comment on Dilworth’s statements.

Meanwhile, one of Squid’s birdies overheard task force members griping about the aerosol sealants hotel workers were spraying by the pool. Seems some (clearly hysterical) folks are uncomfortable with chemicals being sprayed in their breathing space without their consent.

Dilworth says – and FOX parrots – that Monterey Superior Court will hear HOPE’s case against the state beginning at 9am on May 8. But Squid’s favorite court clerk tells Squid it’s not on the calendar. Case dismothed?
