WHAT’S UP WITH THAT

A reader wonders how Pacific Grove’s Jamie Mitchell, who survived 18 traumatic years in the foster system to become a boxer on the cusp of the Olympics, fared at last week’s trials in Colorado Springs. In a 112-pound bout against Amanda Pavone, Mitchell appeared to outfight her opponent. Judges first awarded the match to Pavone, then instructed the ref to raise Mitchell’s hand, then neither. Then, after an excruciating 45 seconds, Pavone’s. “They took my fight,” Mitchell says. “Oh well. I’ll keep working.”
