CSU Monterey Bay students are holding a "Death to Discrimination" demonstration today in response to two racist incidents on campus.
On Tuesday evening a white student yelled "f*** you n*****" at a black female student, says Black Students United President Caliah Hill. Hill says the student may have been drunk, but the next morning somebody chalked "f*** black people" on the sidewalk in front of the Otter Express building.
"It's completely despicable," Hill says. "This is intolerable and unacceptable."
The incidents follow a outbreak of racially-charged episodes at other California campuses: In February UC San Diego students rallied after a student hung a noose in the college's library. Offensive graffiti with a noose was later tagged at UC Santa Cruz, triggering protests. Police are also investigating swastikas showing up at UC Davis.
CSUMB President Dianne Harrison released a statement decrying the incidents. "I want to remind all members of our community that such behavior will not be tolerated at CSU Monterey Bay."
BSU members and supporters will chalking positive messages on campus and wearing black in solidarity. "We are putting discrimination and racism to rest right here and right now," Hill says.
