Two North Salinas High School students were walking along the 200 block of Maryal Drive in Salinas on the afternoon of Oct. 11 when a gunman approached them on foot and began shooting, according to police. Salinas police officers found Alonso Morales, 14, unresponsive and medics say he died at the scene. Morales' companion, also 14, was injured and transported to a Bay Area hospital where he is reportedly in serious but stable condition.
Witnesses describe the shooter as Hispanic male, age 17 to 21, with dark skin and medium build. Police say he may have fled in a medium-sized tan car.
The incident is being investigated as gang related. Last week, the Salinas Police Department made two arrests for the Oct. 1 homicide of Jaime Esteban Guerrero, 20, and the attempted homicide of his companion who is being treated for gunshot wounds at a Bay Area hospital.
