For those local residents who were fans of Santa Cruz vocalist Nora Cruz from the mid-‘80s to the mid-‘90s, they should expect something a little different with the latest incarnation of her band.
From 1986 to 1996, Cruz, along with her then-husband and lead guitarist Gil Cadilli, performed original songs and covers with a blues, soul and gospel feel. But, in 1996, Cruz and Cadilli were divorced, and she decided to drop her music career to focus on raising her daughter. This past April at Santa Cruz’s Moe’s Alley, Cruz stepped back onto the stage due in part by prompting from her ex-husband and daughter. And now, Cruz is going in a different direction than her previous music career.
“I have a real high energy to myself, so I wanted to do rock ‘n’ roll,” she says.
These days, in addition to jazzy ballads by artists like Ruth Brown and Etta James, the seasoned performer is adding rock tunes by the Pretenders and Sheryl Crow to her set lists.
According to Cruz—who has guitarist Billy Edgell and bassist Jeff Kissell back from her previous band—her fans are excited about the new direction.
NORA CRUZ PLAYS OCEAN THUNDER, 214 LIGHTHOUSE AVE. IN MONTEREY, SATURDAY AT 9PM. NO COVER. 643-9169.
