With all the natural beauty and outdoor adventures to be had in Monterey County, why not get away from the library a while and play outside? To reserve county campsites and group areas for parks within the Monterey County Parks Department, call 647-7799 (Monterey) or 755-4899 (Salinas). Here are a few of our favorite parks:
Peninsula and Environs
Garland Ranch Regional Park, 700 W. Carmel Valley Rd., Carmel Valley, 659-4488. Miles of nature and equestrian trails wind through this 4,500-acre park that rises from the Carmel River to the slopes of the Santa Lucia Range. Excellent docent program. Field trips available, 659-6062.
Jacks Peak, 25020 Jacks Peak Park Rd., Monterey. This 525-acre ridgetop park offers picnic areas, barbecues and a group site that accommodates up to 50 people. A paved road goes almost all the way to the top of Jacks Peak (1,068 feet), the highest point on the Peninsula.
Laguna Grande Regional Park, off Canyon Del Rey Blvd., Seaside. This 34-acre park bordering the cities of Seaside and Monterey surrounds a fresh-water marsh and lake and includes picnic areas, bicycling and pedestrian pathways, and a children''s playground.
Lake El Estero Park, Camino El Estero between Del Monte Avenue and Fremont Street, Monterey, 646-3866. Whether you rent paddleboats, feed the ducks, or picnic on the lawn, fun abounds at this 25-acre city park surrounding a central lake.
Point Lobos State Reserve, three miles south of Carmel, off Highway 1, 624-4909. If you want to see seals, sea otters, panoramic ocean views, check out Point Lobos. One of the most picturesque parks close to home. 9am-6:30pm.
The Monterey Peninsula Recreation Trail, This paved bike, Rollerblade and pedestrian trail is one of the best activities around. It''s free, there''s lots to do, and you can travel along the bay for nine miles, checking out the views and people from Pacific Grove to Marina. Just watch your speed, since it can get crowded, keep your dog on a leash and watch out for the bicycle cops.
Fort Ord Public Lands, Highway 1 and Reservation Road, 394-8314. Part of the former Fort Ord base is now a biking, hiking and horseback riding oasis. Pick up a self-guiding map at libraries or the BLM ranger office. Popular trails can be accessed at Gigling Road, Old Reservation Road, and Toro Creek Road.
Big Sur
Andrew Molera State Park, 21 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1, 667-2315. This 5,000-acre state park stretches along the Pacific for four miles southeast of the Big Sur River with access to one of the longest beaches in Big Sur.
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, 37 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1, 667-2315. This beautiful and southernmost state park in Big Sur encompasses close to 4,000 acres stretching from the Pacific coastline to the 3,000-foot level of the Santa Lucia Range.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, 31 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1, 667-2315. Established in 1933, this popular state park offers spectacular hikes through dense redwood canyons as well as mountain peak trails affording awesome views of the Big Sur coastline.
Salinas and Beyond
Laguna Seca Recreation Area, 1025 Monterey-Salinas Highway, 647-7799. A multiple-use facility, the Laguna Seca raceway is host to frequent auto and motorcycle races; there are more than 180 camp sites for RVs and tents; an outdoor amphitheater is used for music concerts; and a rifle/pistol range. Day use.
Toro Park, 501 Monterey-Salinas Highway, Salinas, 755-4899. Toro Park has both a large, tamed picnic area, an untamed wilderness area and mountain biking trails. Day use.
Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, NE of Moss Landing, 1700 Elkhorn Rd., 2 miles north of Dolan Road, 728-2822. Five miles of trails meander through this estuary area. It''s an important nursery area for many fish, sharks and rays, and home to over 200 species of birds. Docent-led tours on weekends.
South Monterey County
Lake San Antonio/Lake Nacimiento, (805) 472-2313/(805) 238-3256. Both of these man-made lakes that border Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties are popular summertime destinations for water-skiing, boating, fishing, camping and picnicking.
