Wal-Mart’s fight to open a supercenter in Salinas is one step closer to reaching voters. The Monterey County Registrar of Voters has certified enough signatures to send the referendum to overturn the City Council’s big box ordinance to the ballot, the City Clerk’s Office announced today.
After the council limited the amount of grocery space Wal-Mart could have in a new store planned for Harden Ranch, Salinas Consumers for Choice, a political group funded by Wal-Mart, submitted 7,195 signatures, which is above and beyond the 4,600 signatures needed to force an election.
The results will be certified at the City Council’s May 5 meeting. On June 2 the council is expected to make a decision on whether to hold a special election or place the referendum on the November 2010 ballot.
