Developer Harvey Dadwal has dreamed of building a hotel on the Monterey Peninsula for about a dozen years, and it’s a dream he has nearly achieved.
But because Dadwal is struggling to get Pacific Gas & Electric to hook up power to his almost-complete, 106-room hotel—located just south of Imjin Parkway in Marina—it appears he will be out about $635,000 in incentives unless PG&E gets to work on the hotel in the next week, which is unlikely.
“We’re facing very tight scheduling conflicts,” PG&E spokesperson Mayra Tostado says. “It’s been all hands on deck, restoring power and rebuilding damaged infrastructure in the tri-county area.”
A development agreement between Dadwal and the city of Marina, which was amended last September to give Dadwal extra time complete the hotel, states it must be open by March 31 in order for Dadwal to get a $635,000 incentive from the city on the $27-$28 million project.
In order to hit that deadline, Dadwal needs a permanent power connection so that state regulators can inspect and approve his elevators and alarm system, a process that will take two to three weeks once the power is hooked up.
That means Dadwal needs power by March 10—unless he is granted another extension by Marina City Council, which he says he will ask for.
Dadwal updated the City Council Feb. 22, but Marina City Manager Layne Long says the possibility of another extension has not yet been considered.
“I think we’re all still hoping that PG&E will get there really soon and we wouldn’t have to talk about that,” he says.
Yet PG&E is so overextended that 70 out-of-state work crews have come to the Central Coast to help repair energy infrastructure in the wake of winter storms.
“The damage has been extensive and unprecedented,” Tostado says. “This is one of the worst situations we’ve seen in decades.”
