While the world of politics is seemingly trying to shut out the voices and visions of many, the world of local art is trending in the opposite direction, as shown in this preview of events from now through the end of 2018. Traditions like the Monterey Jazz Festival are as strong as ever, continuing to uplift younger generations while honoring the legends. The upcoming Days and Nights is expanding its reach, adding CSUMB Salinas Center for Arts and Culture as a venue. Many affordably priced or free exhibits, dances and plays invite wider audiences, and many tell stories of women, immigrants and youth. It all tells us that art is in demand, and art is for the masses.

61st Monterey Jazz Festival
This is where celebrities of today, years past and years to come all converge for a days-long lineup on multiple stages, indoors and outdoors. The fairgrounds becomes the center of jazz standards, experimental stuff and everything in between, including artists who venture well beyond the genre of jazz. Among this year’s acclaimed performers are Norah Jones, Jon Batiste, Oscar Hernández & The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Diana Reeves. Now in its 61st year, this festival has proven it knows how to curate and cultivate new talent and reach new generations of listeners – including its own homegrown Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, which also performs. American Night: The Ballad of Juan José
The description of this timely production calls Juan José’s journey through U.S. history “fantastical.” Given today’s real-life political circumstances, it seems the only thing fantastical about it is time travel. (The play pre-dates the current White House administration.) The titular character is studying for his citizenship exam, when he’s whisked through history, meeting pop icons, confronting stereotypes, and learning the truth about people and power. At least this version of questions about Americanness comes with a healthy dose of humor. [SR]

Monterey County Artists Open Studio Tour
“Hillside Splendor” by Peggy Olsen
How many pieces of art can you gaze upon in one weekend? How about making that two weekends? The annual Monterey County Artists Open Studio Tour returns, featuring some 90 artists in workspaces across the county. And just as the name suggests, artists open their workspaces and guests embark on a self-guided tour that takes them from studio to studio, and down some lanes they may never have traveled. It starts Sept. 29-30 with Monterey Peninsula, coastal and Carmel Valley locations open to the public. On Oct. 6-7, the tour resumes through Salinas, South County and North County. An exhibition featuring one work by each artist is held at the Walter Lee Avery Gallery at Seaside’s City Hall from Sept. 10-Oct. 25. [DF]

Days and Nights Festival
Philip Glass’ Days and Nights Festival has always roamed. Roamed in the places, indoors and outdoors, they hold concerts and lectures. Roamed in the music and documentaries they highlight. But this fall they expand even further and hold a concert in the CSUMB Salinas Center for Arts and Culture for the first time – for free. The Salinas reception is a miniature showing of the first concert at the Henry Miller Library, featuring composer/pianist Glass and Wixárika musicians, who trace their ancestry and spiritual music to the indigenous people of Mexico. Expect the usual variety of artistic enlightenment. [MA]

You’d Be Prettier if You Smiled
“You’d Be Prettier, If You Smiled” by Temple Sisters
When the Monterey Museum of Art presented The New Domestics, Finding Beauty in the Mundane, the exhibit started something more than recognition of women gaining notice in contemporary art. Just what defines beauty or mundane? What roles do class and gender play in behavioral expectations or the objectification of women? And how do artists address the social and cultural pressures on female identity? This exhibition at the Carl Cherry Center will further these and other important conversations. It features work by the Temple Sisters, Susan Abbott Martin and Maria Porges. [DF]
