Going into the back 9 at Pebble Beach, Paul Goydos and Dustin Johnson were deadlocked for first: both players a few strokes ahead of the next place pros. That was until the 14th green when Goydos fell apart.
With the hole atop of a cone of trimmed grass, Goydos' approach shot bounced on the green and rolled down a steep hill on the left side. As spectators "ooo-ed," Goydos' chip attempts were not enough, ending the golfer's hope of winning this year's Pro Am. He went onto the 15th tee with a quadruple bogey on 14.
Last year's champ Dustin Johnson birdied 18—at that point tied with David Duvall—to cap off a second consecutive Pro Am victory, making him only the fifth player to do so.
Johnson finished the day with a 74—his highest score of the weekend's four rounds.
Going into the final day of golf, Paul Goydos and Dustin Johnson were tied at 18-under-par.
Golf fans followed every shot meticulously by the two pros at Pebble Beach on Sunday morning, as Johnson took a slight lead, shooting par on the fifth hole and an eagle on six. But Johnson slowed on the ninth hole with a double bogey, leaving him one stroke under Goydos. Goydos finished tied for fifth place with three other players.
As one journalist at the press center mentioned, "The real golf doesn't start until the back nine on Sunday."
