• CSU Monterey Bay’s capstone festival is like a science fair, talent show and thesis project rolled into three days. (See story, at left.) Per a press release, “they include research presentations, original poetry, oral histories, installation art, photography, tabletop exhibits, films and videos, multimedia works and computer visualizations” all day Thursday and most of Friday. • CSUMB isn’t the only local school of higher learning that’s giving a platform to students to show their stuff. Students at Hartnell College’s Academy for College Excellence will present the findings of their research in the topics of legalization of marijuana, police brutality, child abuse and more. • Big Sur painter, writer and teacher Erin Lee Gafill, whose family owns the legendary Nepenthe restaurant in Big Sur, speaks (and shows slides) 5:30-6:30pm Friday at the Monterey Museum of Art (Pacific) on the topic of “A Legacy in the Arts.” The presentation is free. 372-5477, www.montereyart.org.
• There’s something about the work of Patrick Michael Karnahan, one of the country’s most esteemed painters of railroads and trains for the last 35 years, featured in books, magazines, posters and calendars. Maybe it’s the way he captures stillness in locomotion, solitude amid cacophony, the union of landscape and machinery. He’s resonating in a way that fans of Bob Ross might appreciate. He talks at his new show sometime between 11am-5pm Saturday at Gallerie Amsterdam in Carmel. 624-4355.
• The One with Nepal benefit concert and fundraiser at Ambrosia India Bistro in Monterey helps raise money for the devastated country and its people. Performers include Juan L. Sanchez, Lillie Lemon and Kenny Chung, donated artwork will be displayed for purchase, and a portion of food and beverage sales will go to the cause. A donation station will be set up, too, representing UNICEF, Save the Children, Red Cross and more. It happens 5-8pm Sunday. 214-5544.
• This Monday is International Museum Day. The International Council of Museums began it in 1977. Last year, more than 35,000 museums in 145 countries participated.
• Santa Catalina Lower School students have stocked the Youth Exhibitions space at Monterey Regional Airport with work that plays with cave paintings and carnival masks. It’s up through September. 624-7910.
