The Harrison Memorial Library Foundation annual book sale takes place Thursday-Saturday at Carmel Mission School's gymnasium.

>> This Thursday, 6-7pm, Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada (720 Via Mirada, Monterey) hosts a painter’s panel discussion with Tracey Adams, Christel Dillbohner and Amy Ellingson, all three of whom are represented in the museum’s SHIFT exhibition.

>> This Thursday, about 8pm, is week 9 of the Big Sur International Short Film Screening Series. The free outdoor Movies in the Park this Saturday at 8:15pm screens Chasing Mavericks, a surfing flick shot in Santa Cruz, at Scholze Park (280 Dickman Ave.) The Forest Theater Guild’s Films in the Forest, moved over to the Carmel Youth Center (albeit inside), shows Cannery Row on Aug. 16.

>> Author Glenda Togni is giving away 100 signed copies of her new romance/suspense novel Smuggler’s Love at Piccadilly Park (Dolores between Ocean and Seventh, Carmel) 3-7pm Friday.

>> Gallery Sur in Carmel hosts an art show by the famed Nyanhongo family. Moses is flying in from Zimbabwe to rock the demonstration, while siblings Agnes and Wellington (and sculptorNorbert Shamurarira) provide 30 new works. The outdoor demo happens 11am-1:30pm Saturday at Piccadilly Park and the opening is 4-7pm at Gallery Sur (Sixth and Dolores). 626-2615.

>> The Monterey Peninsula Gospel Community Choir will sing at the 105th Anniversary of First Baptist Church of Pacific Grove (246 Laurel Ave.) at 4pm Sunday. You don’t have to be church-going to go; you just have to have ears and a soul to be moved. Dramatically.

>> Old Capitol Books (639 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey) claims “Things are sizzlin’ here!” No lie. There’s Back Alley Poetry, the Monterey Bay Poetry Consortium, the Theory and Philosophy reading group, the Thinking Critically About Society discussions, and a coming political prisoner letter-writing campaign. Add to that the writers’ open mic, 5-7pm this Tuesday (and every second Tuesday).

>> Pacific Grove Art Center is accepting submissions for solo shows in all media by artists for their 2015 exhibition calendar. Read their requirements at pgartcenter.org; the deadline is Sept. 10. Call 375-2208 for questions.

>> Positive theater news: The Hartnell College Foundation has been awarded a two-year, $90,000 grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to support the Western Stage’s theater student scholarships, new productions and outreach. “Never stifle a generous impulse,” William R. Hewlett was prone to say.
