Domini Anne didn’t intend to have another show so soon after the success of Awaken at last summer’s West End Festival in Sand City. But then politics inspired her.
The Carmel-based designer says the upcoming shows and fashion installation entitled Dusk, which opens Friday, Jan. 11 at the Pacific Grove Art Center, was inspired by confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh and the national conversation about consent.
“If you got on social media, you could feel this palpable emotion that was going through everyone re-examining their past and how they behaved – both men and women,” Anne says.
Anne will be co-producing the show with local DJ Hanif Panni—who also created a lot of the visual art for the show—and local composer Mark Governor. It features an original score from Panni and live music during the show, which features exclusively women in 23 outfits created by Anne.
“It’s not a fashion show, but rather a multi-disciplinary, immersive art experience,” Anne says.
When the two shows are not going on, the outfits will be displayed on body casts of the real models and hung at PGAC as if they were flying through the air. During the two shows, the body forms will not be clothed and lit from inside.
“Turning this into an installation allows people to go experience it a number of times.”
Dusk is more of a fashion musical than a traditional runway show. The story follows a female singer protagonist who transforms after experiencing violence.
The fashion and music will be joined by live music from local artists such as Ace De la Vergne, Eric Wobbles and a variety of styles from a violin concerto, an operatic section, and singer-songwriter.
“Musically, it’s a really cool collaboration,” Governor says. “We’ve woven the music through the dancers and models and these installed fashion pieces.”
Between the two shows, other musicians will do smaller popup events at the space with models in the costumes.
“We want to help the area know that fashion isn’t only about selling clothes, but an art form,” Anne says.
