For over a decade, public access to Palo Corona Regional Park has been limited, as the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District only issued up to 13 permits per day due to the parking constraints of the access point off of Highway 1.
That changes tomorrow, as the park district's recent acquisition of 190-acres at the former Rancho Cañada Golf Club—which will provide public access to the park off of Carmel Valley Road—will officially open to the public, sans permit.
Encompassing about 4,500 acres of diverse habitat, Palo Corona has long been an under-visited gem among the region's parks, and offers some of the most stunning views in the county.
Visitors to the park's land at Rancho Cañada, which was acquired by the Trust for Public Land in 2016 and transferred to the park district in April, will find it still in the process of transitioning from a golf course to native habitat, a process that will be ongoing in the coming months and years.
On-leash dogs will be allowed in Palo Corona, but only in the Rancho Cañada area and along the South Bank Trail on the Carmel River.
