Residents in Monterey County have organized two protests in the past week after the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an ICE agent in Texas on July 11. A third demonstration is scheduled for Friday, July 17 in Salinas.

For the past week, residents in Monterey County have protested the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old homebuilder from Mexico, who was killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, on July 7. He had no criminal convictions.

His killing has created a wave of protests in Texas and other cities across the country demanding accountability and an independent investigation.

In Monterey County, there is a protest set for Friday, July 17 by the No Non-Sense Brigade, a political activist group. The "Stand-up for Lorenzo" event will be on the Highway 101 overpass bridge near Mount Toro High School, 330 Sherwood Drive in Salinas, from 4-5:30pm.

"The large banner bridge sign alerts the community and politicians of what we will or will not tolerate from the agencies that are paid for with our tax dollars,” the group writes on the event announcement website.

Prior to this event, two local activist groups, Indivisible Monterey and Root of Resistance TPS organized demonstrations on Saturday, July 11 at Window on the Bay in Monterey and Tuesday, July 14 on North Main and Harden Parkway in Salinas, respectively.
