Kim Solano is shuttering The Haute Enchilada, at least temporarily.
The popular Moss Landing cafe and art gallery with its welcoming patio space has been a destination for 25 years. Solano cited fires at the nearby Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility owned by Vistra and their impact on business and health as reasons for the closure.
A large fire on Jan. 16 spewed toxic smoke causing health concerns for area residents. Another fire broke out at the same location on Feb. 18.
“The unpredictable nature of the lithium battery storage plant…has created uncertainties that we cannot ignore,” Solano wrote in a statement emailed on Feb. 21 and posted to the restaurant’s website. “The decision weighs heavily on our hearts.”
Although there is a tone of finality to the announcement, Solano says that her team hopes to reopen the restaurant to the public once there are assurances that the area is safe.
Fumes from lithium-ion battery fires emit toxic gases such as hydrogen fluoride, as well as metals that can be harmful. Several agencies are evaluating the situation, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Cal Fire and the county’s Department of Emergency Management.
The Jan. 16 fire caused evacuation orders and temporary road closures.
“We have been affected by [the fires] financially, emotionally and possibly to the detriment of our immediate and long-term health,” Solano said.
In an email, former state senator Bill Monning urged people to reach out to Solano to share their appreciation for the community spirit she created at the restaurant and gallery.
For now, Solano plans to keep the space closed to the general public. She will allow private events and use by Airbnb guests.
She will post updates on the restaurant website at hauteenchilada.com.
“We look forward to the day we can welcome you back with open arms,” Solano said.
