Though Monterey County might be the salad bowl of the nation, woe to the vegetarians among us, who are routinely caged in with only a dish or two to choose from when dining out, which nine times out of 10 means a grilled portobello. The other time is probably at Tillie Gort’s, where herbivores can eat free range with an array of veggie starters (like the grilled veggie stack with mozzarella), two eggs Bene choices (eggs Florentine Bene), four breakfast specials (artichoke-pesto “green” skillet), six tofu plates (Greek tofu scramble), three solid sandos (Monterey mix), four different veggie burgers (oats-rice-cheese-egg-mushroom burg), a half dozen salads (Mexican fiesta), and too much more to name (Jimmy’s special and the “no meat loaf”).
