St. Mary’s book sale.

• First, a bit of internal news. After 6 years of assembling, curating, coordinating and editing the A&E Calendar (that’s roughly 300 issues), I am focusing more exclusively on writing and blogging about Monterey County’s arts and culture happenings for the Weekly. Taking the helm of the calendar will be longtime Weekly music writer Adam Joseph. As always, send your calendar events to calendar@mcweekly.com about two weeks in advance (it’s free and easy publicity), and your culture tips to walter@mcweekly.com. Now a word from our libraries.

• Give a person a great book and they read for a day; teach a person to find their own great book and they read for a lifetime. Carmel’s Harrison Memorial Library (Ocean and Lincoln, 624-7323) offers to do the latter with their “Find a Great Book” workshop. Saturday, 10-11am, for people who make reservations, they demonstrate “book suggestion tools and websites” such as NoveList and Goodreads.

• Monterey Public Library (625 Pacific St., Monterey, 646-5601) takes the above suggestion to the next step while staying in the digital realm. From 2-3:30pm on Sunday, they do a Library eBooks training workshop on how to borrow digital books from the system’s website. Bring your smart phone or eReader.

• “In front of 58 Southbank Road in the Robles Del Rio/Hitchcock Creek neighborhood, avid reader Laura Lee Lienk has just opened an official Little Free Library,” reads the Carmel Valley Association newsletter. This is a movement (LittleFreeLibrary.org) started in 2009 in which mailbox-like wooden constructions, usually shaped like a school house or a rustic cottage or simply a box with a glass or plexiglass lid (not unlike a Weeklynewspaper box) serves as a free exchange for people to “take a book, leave a book.” Lienk’s charter number is 8,063. That’s a lot of books circulating through communities that don’t have easy access to such.

• The treasured Monterey County Free Libraries is enlisting members of the public (that would be you, dear reader) to become literacy tutors for adults yearning to improve their lives by improving their English literacy. The system’s ReadMCFL has more than 75 eager learners on their list. It’s a commitment of two-three hours a week for at least six months, all throughout the county. Call 883-7597 or email andrewscs@co.monterey.ca.us to get in on the two orientation sessions 6pm Monday in Marina and 6pm Wednesday in Seaside. Give a gift that will reverberate throughout someone’s life.
