Asked at Safeway in Del Rey Oaks.
ANNE DeLONG | Troubadour | Seaside
Q: I think what comes up generally is the image of the hip-hop white boy trying to be a gangster, but that’s not what I see.
Vibe It Out: It’s misappropriation when people utilize a culture as a caricature, or disrespectfully, as an adopted persona.
HUGH QUIGLEY | Health Care provider | Seaside
Q: The musical signature of 4 by 4 came from Africa to the U.S. through the slave trade. This is a significant influence.
In context: I can say things about a friend, but it’s not derogatory. Anyone else hearing our conversation would think I’m being a jerk.
TONYA ANDERSON | Student | Seaside
Q: My Puerto Rican grandmother told me to stay in school and be careful who I talk to.
Manifest destiny: The way people own everything.
