FLAT EARTH SOCIETY… Squid has long trusted that local electeds would be a little more environmentally savvy than our Climate-Denier-In-Chief.
They do, after all, live on the shores of a national marine sanctuary, and the stunning landscapes of Monterey County draw visitors from across the globe.
Well, it turns out Squid was dead wrong on that account. At the June 2 Monterey County Mayors Association meeting, Del Rey Oaks mayor Jerry Edelen objected when Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado asked the mayors to sign a letter to the Coastal Commission asking for the agency to stop Cemex mining operations that have contributed to some of the highest coastal erosion rates in the state.
Edelen complained that the scientific studies he’s looked at concerning Cemex and erosion “weren’t worth a doodle.” The group declined to sign.
Later, Pacific Grove Mayor Bill Kampe suggested the mayors draft a statement reacting to President Donald Trump pulling out of the Paris climate accord.
Again, Edelen objected. “In my opinion climate change is unproven,” he said.
Welp.
OSCAR-WORTHY… Sometimes Squid likes to slink into Monterey harbor from Squid’s dark and dank underwater lair and perch Squidself on the front of the sailboats and fantasize that Squid is on on the bow of the Titanic, Leo-like, and yell, “Squid’s king of the world!”
Apparently Squid isn’t the only one with cinematic fantasies. During the May 31 Monterey Peninsula College Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Margaret-Anne Coppernoll waxed poetic in her support of embattled President Walt Tribley, who’s under fire as he faces a faculty strike and a possible loss of accreditation in less than two years.
In a long list of reasons why she thinks he’s the best president ever, she noted had he been at the helm of the Titanic the ship would have survived.
“With tremendous courage and moral fiber,” she announced, “he is navigating our college in the only direction it can and should go in and avoiding calamity down the road. If he had been at the helm of the Titanic, the Titanic would not have hit a glacier and perished.”
Copperknoll went on to note that “any organization would surely jump at the chance to have him as their own leader.”
Well, not every organization: Tribley was recently in the running to take over the helm at Yosemite Community College District.
He got passed over for another candidate.
