Squid Speaks

Beep, Beep…Squid has reservoirs of patience that are only surpassed by Squid’s massive reserves of modesty.

Squid sits through meeting like last week’s Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting, where the 9am agenda wasn’t addressed until 6pm, or the recent Salinas City Council session that ran more than six hours.

Squid has even gotten good at outlasting hours of pounding and vibrating as the new juice bar/cafe/joint to think great thoughts/view great art/have great conversations—called The Press Club featuring Perfectly Pressed—is built underneath and next to the newsroom. (Not to be outdone, the city of Seaside is now sawing down a tree next to Squid’s window.)

But Squid can handle it.

Or so Squid thought. Squid discovered Squid blood’s boiling point last time Car Week came to town. To get from Quail Lodge to Seaside, a 12 mile drive, took Squid two hours. Squid could’ve eaten three buckets of shrimp popcorn, cleaned out the Squid Lair and watched two episodes of Game of Thrones in that time. With bonus footage. Instead Squid counted the number of weeds along Carmel Valley Road. (It’s 479,321.)

What’s worse: Squid spoke to one local Car Week event organizer—who will remain unnamed—and expected a little appreciation for the locals sacrifice. Instead the organizer tried to force Squid to avoid describing the event as “free.”

“Just say ‘open to the public,’” he growled.

Seems that brings all the locals who can’t necessarily afford Alfa Romeos and Duesenbergs. Which clogs things up.

Interesting observations, Squid. Did your informant also share the magic that allows car week (now month) events continue to grow and thrive without any public permitting processes of any sort, including any discussions of traffic impacts?
