Celia Jiménez here, thinking back to my first day of school, from getting my shoes and uniform ready to the excitement of being back in the classroom.
This week thousands of kids, from transitional kindergarten to high school, are returning to school. My niece, Vivian, who is now in kindergarten, started classes in July. I was a little surprised since the first day of school in many districts in Monterey County is this week.
Salinas Union High School District students, for example, return to the classroom tomorrow, Aug. 6 while classes at Monterey Peninsula Unified and Alisal Union school districts begin on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Parents and kids have to prepare for the school year with clothes, shoes, backpacks, supplies and more. Teachers have to plan for their lessons for the upcoming school year to keep students engaged in the classroom.
Different organizations, including Pacific Gas & Electric, offered free haircuts at Sergio Studios Beauty Salon in Salinas for more than 150 kids on July 30. Monterey County Office of Education distributed more than 4,500 backpacks across the county through Stuff the Bus, an annual event where volunteers put together backpacks with school supplies for local students.
I’m not sure if my sister gave Vivian a new backpack—we used to get a new one every year. But she’s now back in school and in the process of improving her speech.
Seeing my friends was my favorite part of going back to school. What was yours?
