David Ligare, a world-class star in the art world, will speak on his work.

Ligare is more than a local painter, even though Monterey County should be extremely grateful that he chose this location to live and create. He is an absolute world-class star; his art leaves no doubt. With a first glance, his mastership is obvious and you will never ask the question that so many of us ask when looking at contemporary paintings and sculptures: Do I like it? Is this art?

His current exhibit at the Monterey Museum of Art—on display until Sept. 1—is titled Spheres of Influence. 

Ligare’s art is extremely modern (he says 21st century photography is in his blood), but remains in a discussion with ancient art and everything that happened after: The Renaissance, baroque, neoclassicism, up to the modern art. Ligare’s work speaks with those of Polykleitos, Piero della Francesca and Marcel Duchamp. His “spheres of influence” are wider than the art itself—his art feeds on philosophy and science, referring to Archimedes, Cicero or modern social critic Camille Paglia.

The upcoming cover story includes a long interview with Ligare, as well as many images from his current and past exhibits. During the interview with the audience we will have a chance to see one of his paintings live. He also promised to share a poem.
