If the Salinas City Council holds to its word and spends Measure G on public safety as it was presented, then all will be well (“Judge sinks Salinas public safety tax election; supporters rally for a new tax measure,” posted Jan. 20). Considering their own campaign mailers, 13,000-plus signatures for a special tax for public safety, and a new month with almost more shooting days than not, it’s quite obvious where the people want the additional tax revenue to be spent. CORRECTIONS: Last week’s Arts & Culture story (“MacArthur Fellows come here with the mission of: each one, teach one,” Jan. 22-28) should’ve noted each MacArthur Fellow receives a stipend of $625,000, not $640,000; fellowships are awarded to between 20 and 25 recipients; and confidential nominations come from invited nominators across a wide range of disciplines who serve anonymously; these nominators are not the same people who serve on the selection committee.
