Power to the Press
Congratulations for a year of really good local journalism. Two features that notably stood out were your editions including a summary of each city in Monterey County’s unique governance and fiscal situation (“A side-by-side look at the budgets for all 12 cities in Monterey County,” Aug. 30-Sept. 5) plus the edition on housing/homelessness (“The Housing Crisis,” Sept. 27-Oct. 3).
It’s great to see local journalism thriving. Here’s to another great journalistic year in 2019. Larry Johnson | Monterey
Through the Wash
Holy crap! I get excited when I find a quarter under the seat cushion (Del Rey Car Wash sues former employee, alleging he embezzled $150,000 in cash,” posted Dec. 11). Todd Strauss | via Facebook
My question is how the hell do they let it get to that amount. Who was doing the bookkeeping?Andy Graham | via Facebook
Good luck collecting that. Robin Welch | via Facebook
Fortune Telling
For the life of me, I cannot believe the Weekly continues to run the absurd Rob Brezsny Freewill Astrology column. Do you read it? Do you understand it? It is a horrible syndicated column of nonsense. There are several learned astrologers living in Monterey County who would give a more definitive read of what’s happening.
Please, time to rid us of his nonsense. Elaine Giampietro | Monterey
All Abuzz
One more tiny step in the right direction (“Seaside plans to make the city friendlier to bees – and their keepers,” Dec. 13-19). Yeah for Seaside! Wonder if we can get Marina on board? Elise Billingsley | via Facebook
Save the bees. Pat Kelley | via Facebook
Canna Conference
Big Sur Holy was great 25 years ago (“First-ever Monterey Cannabis Summit showcases the region’s deep industry roots,” Dec. 13-19). Now it’s not even in the conversation. By the way, Humboldt and Mendocino counties are the Napa of weed; Monterey County will be like Paso – a good wine region but not known like Napa. Eliot Davis | via Facebook
Sad to see the county go downhill. Greg Araujo | via Facebook
Off the Grid
It’s a unique life and takes unique individuals to live it (“Even in the bustle of modern life, monks and nuns lead quiet lives of simplicity in Monterey County,” Dec. 13-19). Dani Carvalho | via Facebook
A Green Christmas
The alterations to our climate are happening so fast that we are now watching our landscapes change on a human timescale. We know the consequences are dire. Multiple recent reports from scientists and government agencies confirm what we already know, we have very little time to make vast and sweeping change. The climate crisis calls for immediate action, but there is a frustrating lack of political will. U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, has introduced a resolution to create a House Select Committee for a Green New Deal in Congress. This is the political action needed to move our country off fossil fuels, create new green jobs and protect human and ecological communities from devastation. Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, should support this resolution. Let’s ask him to do so: (202) 225-2861. Emily Underwood | Carmel Valley
Surf’s Up
Whoa!! So cool to watch the big waves! (“Large swell pounds Central Coast with huge waves upward of 50 feet,” posted Dec. 17.) Alice Bowhay | via Facebook

Live and Learn
No one will ever be able to replace [Director of the Monterey County Free Libraries] Jayanti Addleman but I am certain that her professionalism has laid a foundation for the next director to succeed (“Artifacts,” Dec. 13-19). John Gianelli | via Facebook
Such a loss for Monterey County. Good luck, Jayanti! Martha Gianelli | via Facebook
Spiking It
I love creating my yearly batch of eggnog! (“Burning Question: Why does eggnog only come in a carton these days?” posted Dec. 7.) I only use high-quality rum and the recipe, for those who are jonesing for George Washington’s brew, is easy: 12 fresh, organic egg yolks; 1 cup organic cream; 2 cups organic whole milk; 1/2 cup organic half-and-half; 3/4 cup organic turbinado sugar or 1/2 cup honey; 1-2 cups rum; nutmeg. Beat egg yolks until fluffy, then blend in sugar or honey until dissolved. Whip cream (be sure to add a touch of sugar or honey so it doesn’t turn to butter) until stiff. Slowly add milk and half-and-half to egg and sugar mixture, with mixer on low, then fold in the whipped cream. Add the rum to taste, grate fresh nutmeg over the top and refrigerate (and taste often!). Yum! Trish Sullivan | Salinas
Cultura Love
I am excited that you are opening a new restaurant on Alvarado! (“Team behind Cultura to debut new downtown Monterey concept in 2019,” posted Dec. 11.) We will spread the word to our Monterey friends! Stephanie Johnstone | via Facebook
The food at the Carmel spot is amazing. Michelle Zavarella | via Facebook
