Sheriff’s in Town

This is getting old hat. Right-wing group has radical extremist speak and left-wing people get pissed. I was there. There were about 200 protesters and exactly four Trump supporters outside the luncheon. These photos make it look like there was equal representation. We were exercising our First Amendment rights in a peaceful manner. Holly Pease | via Facebook

I don’t understand all the uproar over the local Republican women inviting Sheriff Joe Arpaio to speak at their luncheon. I attended the Monterey Peninsula Republican Women Federated’s Liberty Luncheon and we all had a great time and it was very successful. The race card they spew because they do not agree with Joe Arpaio is appalling. Thank you law enforcement and our private security that helped us be safe from the protesters. Marilyn Galli | via web

Is it at all possible for us all to agree that A) we have a huge illegal immigration and smuggling problem on the southern border that needs addressing, and B) there are standards for how we treat people in jail and sheriffs who break those standards and disobey judge’s orders should not be celebrated. Passing on Gas

“Highest ridership in years” but a $3 million tax handout is what keeps you afloat? (“Bracing for a possible gas tax repeal, MST may cut routes, raise its bus fares or both,” Sept. 13-19). Maybe it is time to re-evaluate the entire public transport system if you are constantly operating at a multi-million-dollar loss and the entire system can be disrupted by one tax law.

Monterey County hosts the largest vintage car race in the world, and some of the largest and most significant car shows in the world. Every year everyone comments on how poor the road conditions are in such a beautiful area. Millions of dollars in tax revenue are brought in by Car Week but it seems that no money is earmarked for maintaining or fixing the roads around the county. Austin Palacios | via Facebook

Anyone who votes yes to repeal that gas tax is a fool. They’re cutting off their noses to spite their faces. I encountered one of those fools the other day at the Gavin Newsom for Governor event in Salinas. When I asked him why he didn’t want our roads to be repaired his only comeback was to claim that the government already has all the money it needs. If you think that Cal Am made a mathematical error in its testimony to the California Public Utilities Commission that underestimates the water’s true cost, I have a terrific deal on a bridge in Brooklyn for you.
