The article about third-party gas providers is OK (“Third-party natural gas providers siphon off some of PG&E’s business,” Dec. 11-17). But the photo is a FAIL!

The photo is of kilowatt-hour meters for metering electrical use, probably from an apartment as there are multiple meters for multiple customers. They are in metal boxes with conduit coming in from overhead wires in older neighborhoods and underground in newer construction.

Gas meters are cast iron for the old ones and die-cast aluminum for the newer stuff. They are fed by pipes coming out of the ground with a pressure regulator – a round disk shaped gadget – on the input side. The output side typically goes into the building through the wall, but that depends on the type of construction. Marc Goldman | Seaside
