A group calling itself Citizens of Seaside for Transparent Government is working to kick City Manager Ray Corpuz out.
In a press release dated Feb. 3, the group announces its plans to circulate a petition of non-support for Corpuz. "During the current economic downturn and significant reduction in revenue, Mr. Corpus [sic] has caused this City major and unnecessary expense that has put this city's General Fund and Redevelopment Agency on the edge of bankruptcy," the press release states.
"Further, because of his poor handling of personnel matters in the Police and Fire Departments, the Citizens of Seaside have lost confidence in the leadership and ability to manage this City. We are demanding that the City Council remove Mr. Ray Corpus [sic] from the City Manager position on or before the 2010 November election."
Corpuz clashed with former Seaside Police Chief Steve Cercone, putting him on administrative leave last summer. Cercone settled with the city, and his employment was terminated Jan. 1. His predecessor, Tony Sollecito, is interim police chief while the city recruits a permanent replacement. Former Fire Chief Jerry Wombacher retired in December, but has agreed to remain as interim.
The press release is authored by Seaside activist Helen Rucker, a former Seaside city councilwoman and a current member of the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District board.
A press conference is scheduled for 5pm Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Embassy Suites in Seaside.
