The law-degree ambitions of a Marina pot collective operator may have gone up in smoke following his suspension from Monterey College of Law (MCOL) and the filing of a restraining order against him.

Kevin Saunders, who operates the Coasterdam Cannabis Collective and is a third-year MCOL law student, was temporarily suspended from the school Sept. 16 for sending allegedly threatening emails to a professor. On Sept. 19, he was also served a temporary restraining order from the school’s dean, Mitchel Winick.

Saunders is no stranger to controversy or restraining orders: Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado filed one against him after Saunders threatened on Facebook to knock Delgado in the teeth. But that order was dismissed, Saunders says.

He claims the “salty” language in an email to Professor Phillip Crawford is subject to attorney-client privilege; Crawford, though, denies ever being Saunders’ counsel.

“The temporary restraining order was considered necessary to protect the students, faculty, administration and property of the law school,” Winick writes by email.

A hearing on the restraining order is set for Oct. 10 in Monterey County Superior Court.
