The June 3 primary was a good day to be an incumbent. Local state-level officials barely had to campaign to hold big leads, though each of the two-way races will go to a runoff in November.
State Sen. Anthony Cannella, R-Ceres, held a 28-point lead over Salinas produce broker Shawn Bagley, a Democrat, based on early returns.
Assemblyman Mark Stone, D-Scotts valley, had a 38-point lead over Republican Palmer Kain, and Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, was 16 points ahead of Republican Mark Starritt.
Gov. Jerry Brown won handily, with 55 percent of the vote—against 14 challengers—in early returns. State Superintendent of Schools Tom Torlakson beat out both of his challengers about two-to-one.
Attorney General Kamala Harris kept her seat with more than 50 percent.
The contest for secretary of state, a position responsible for overseeing elections and campaign finance reporting, remained neck-and-neck between Democratic state Senator Alex Padilla and Republican Pete Peterson of Pepperdine University.
Monterey County voters leaned more Democratic than the statewide average in the primary.
