Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue is expected to make it official Tuesday: Green Vehicles, a San Jose-based start-up, plans to set up shop in the city's shuttered Firestone factory by the end of this year.

"We anticipate concluding negotiations [with the city] by the end of this month," says Green Vehicles CEO Ehad Youssef.

Salinas has edged out high-tech powerhouses Menlo Park and Santa Clara as the company's first choice for a new plant and could now gain a foothold in an industry that just might be the next big thing in manufacturing.
